On this date in 1995, former Yankee baseball great Mickey Mantle died from liver cancer. He was quoted as joking that if he had known he'd live this long, he'd have “taken better care of himself”. I have heard this line from many thru the years. Mantle's father and son both died in their 30's from Hodgkin ’s disease, a fate he believed would befall him.

Brother Bud returned from his vacation and appears rested. We are both thankful. He had a good and restful vacation and I had the opportunity to get first person experience of and reassurance that Mom will be able to enjoy an independent lifestyle with minimal assistance. It's been suggested that Bud continue adding commentary for this string of blogs about Mom.

Bud and I also discussed issues around stress and its negative affects on health. Another brother, Robert, related telling Mom awhile back that she did not need to worry about something on her mind at the time, as he had handled the issue. ”I'll worry if I want to” she replied. She's enjoys her independence.

Bud, Mom, and I played rummy, and I rallied to win. Purchase of a lottery ticket is on my agenda today to see how far luck will carry me.

It was a routine and ineventful day for Mom. We walked, did brief breathing exercises, treadled, and she watched movies. Perhaps uneventful is not a good choice of words. At her age all days are eventful and to be enjoyed!

Closing today's accounting with a quote from Pearl S. Buck; ”Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.”

Hope yours was an eventful (good) day. Richard
